Quartet Lab is a string quartet program for junior-high and high-school students led by Quartet Nouveau. Labs are held throughout the school year and during the summer. During these labs, the students prepare music from various composers of standard string quartet literature including Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Brahms, and many more! We help the students experiment with musical phrasing, dynamics, articulation, intonation, and other musical techniques.
Approximately one month before the lab, students receive a copy of their part, the score, and a recording of their piece. Their preparation of the material ahead of time is necessary to make each workshop a successful experience for the entire group. We encourage students of all ages to apply, and we then assign each student to a group of similar ages and similar levels of playing. Students in the intermediate to advanced level should apply. Beginners should wait until they feel comfortable playing in book 3 of Suzuki or a comparable method. If you have questions about a student's ability to participate, feel free to contact Kimberly Hain at kimhain2@yahoo.com.
Playing in a string quartet is an amazing experience, and it is the quickest way to improve as a musician. We are excited to offer this opportunity to young musicians!
